SUMMARY:

With independence and the establishment of the constitutional system in
Brazil – which required the separation of the political powers that constituted the State,
the presence of instances of political representation, supported by the citizens' vote, and
the guarantee of individual rights – the Chamber of Deputies, as an institution integrated
into the Legislative Branch, constituted a new space for political action and a new space
for political representation, insofar as its members were elected instead of being chosen
by the monarch. Thus, from this place occupied by the Chamber of Deputies and given
the need to build the political-administrative, economic, and legal foundations of the
new State, this research proposes to analyze the political role played by the institution
during the reign of Dom Pedro I, especially between the years 1826 and 1831,
observing how the intervention maneuvers of Parliament (carried out through
parliamentary actions and speeches) in relation, above all, to the actions of the
government contributed to the political intensification between the Chamber and the
Executive and the development of conflicts between the powers. Thus, through the
analysis of the Annals of the Chamber of Deputies, the objective of this research is to
understand how the opposition to the government of Emperor Pedro I was constructed
and articulated within Parliament, resulting in the abdication of the emperor on April 7,
1831.
