The research aims to analyze the discourse of O Estado de S. Paulo and O Globo about the end of the Soviet Union, between 1990 and 1991. Critical Discourse Analysis is used as theoretical and methodological support. Thus, discourse is understood as an instrument of power and a social practice that constitutes and contributes to social relations in a dialectical way. In addition, newspapers are approached as private apparatuses of hegemony – institutions that act in political direction and in the formation of consensus in society. The aim is to analyze how the events that occurred in the USSR were interpreted by these newspapers and in the defense of which interests based on the editorials of these newspapers. The work aims to answer which political-economic project was defended for Brazil after the Soviet collapse and to what extent the neoliberal spectrum can be considered homogeneous in the aforementioned context.
