SUMMARY:

This chapter seeks to understand the labor arrangements within factories in the city of Rio de Janeiro, focusing on the social and legal profiles of their workers, as well as on the trades, wages, roles, and specializations found in these production facilities. The analysis seeks to identify how the division of labor was structured in these establishments and how different legal conditions were linked to the functions performed in the production process. The analysis begins with the hierarchy of trades within the factory setting, reconstructed from provisions submitted to the Board of Trade and from court records, seeking to demonstrate how the distinction between masters, journeymen, and apprentices—inherited from the artisanal tradition—was linked to the legal status of workers, without, however, excluding enslaved individuals from skilled technical roles. The practice of teaching trades to captives, documented in newspaper advertisements and inventories, is examined as an economic strategy of the owners, who increased the sale and rental value of their enslaved people through specialization. Next, the chapter shifts its focus to the composition of the workforce in the Court’s privileged factories between 1854 and 1856, based on tables published in the Reports of the Ministry of Finance. The data allow for an examination of the distribution of free national workers, foreign workers, and enslaved workers by industry, and the identification of sectors with the highest concentration of enslaved labor and the gender boundaries that restricted women’s presence to certain industries. Finally, the chapter turns to the forms of employment and remuneration that coexisted in these spaces. Based on André Gaillard’s post-mortem inventory and Frederico Bel’s employment contract, the remuneration structure of the Andaraí paper mill is reconstructed at different points in time, comparing the wages of the foreign worker, the free national workers, and the enslaved workers in their various forms of employment.
