SUMMARY:

This thesis seeks to investigate the experiences of supervised labor among the first generations of enslaved people and freed people in the municipalities of Piraí and Barra Mansa between 1870 and 1910. To this end, we analyze guardianship documents, contracts for the hiring of child labor, and guardians’ statements of responsibility, cross-referencing them with public complaints regarding guardianship practices and the situation of children as reported in the abolitionist newspaper Cidade do Rio (1887–1902). We propose to situate these local dynamics as part of an Atlantic culture of abolition by highlighting the central role of enslaved women’s wombs in the production and reproduction of slavery, and subsequently in the control of labor and concerns regarding the limits of freedom for people born free. Through documentary research, we aim to understand the different ways of mobilizing child labor, the role of municipal orphan courts in these processes, the influences on the maintenance of family relationships, and the impacts of such practices on the republican-abolitionist press. We prioritize an analytical approach that considers the experiences of free-born individuals and their families as they mobilized the civil court, through the Orphans’ Court, to expand their demands for material necessities at a time when the abolitionist debate was at its height, highlighting the need for compensation for labor, access to education, and other working conditions that diverged from the logic of slavery.
