SUMMARY:

Throughout the 20th century, the transformations of Latin American capitalism were accompanied by the creation and strengthening of business organizations dedicated to coordinating economic interests and intervening in national and continental political debates. This research is situated within that process and focuses on the Inter-American Council for Trade and Production (CICYP), an organization created following the American Conference of Trade and Production Associations, held in Montevideo in 1941. Bringing together associations linked to industry, commerce, finance, and rural production from various American countries, the Council established a permanent structure for business coordination, organized through national sections, commissions, assemblies, and networks of leaders. This study aims to analyze the organization’s social and business composition, the networks built by its leaders, the political and economic agenda formulated around the defense of free enterprise and private property, and the mechanisms used to influence governments. The main objective of this research is to understand how CICYP emerged as a transnational space for the political organization of factions within the ruling classes and to investigate its role in destabilizing democracies in Brazil, Chile, and Uruguay.
