RESUMO:

The present study has the object of study Ermelinda Lopes de Vasconcellos. I seek to investigate the repercussion of his graduation in the medical field at the Faculdade de Medicina do Rio de Janeiro in 1888, through the Carioca periodicals  and the Carnival of 1889. On this, I discuss the social context in which Ermelinda was formed and how was it possible to move on with your career, that is, what strategies did she use and what difficulties did she face.

The temporal cut comprises the years from 1888 to 1890, since it aims to highlight the discourses about her graduation and about the  female insertion in the medical career. Thus, through the analysis of Ermelinda, I try to understand the mechanisms of gender and class exclusion present in the medical field and in the social imaginary of the second half of the nineteenth century.
