RESUMO:

This study has as central purpose to give contributions to the gender questions related to the period of the Late Middle Ages, evocating the image of Beatrice of Castile – a little-known queen in the Lusitanian and, especially, Brazilian historiographies – and Philippa of Lancaster, wife of the Portuguese king John I. Taking as sources royal chronicles developed between the end of the fifteenth century and the beginning of the sixteenth century by Fernão Lopes, Gomes Eannes de Zurara and Rui de Pina, the thesis intends to develop a comparative study between the two characters, analysing the place attributed to the first in Portugal and identifying similarities and differences to the role played by the second in the referred kingdom. There is, at last, not only the necessity of comparing the investigated sources for the purpose of identifying the constancies and ruptures referring to those feminine figures, but also in what they associate (or not) with the identities attributed to their husbands, the king Afonso IV of Portugal and the already mentioned D. John, since gender is a category that has to be interpreted as relational and not universal or invariant.
