RESUMO:

The research that is presented now aims to study how the inquisition was represented in the face of Portuguese society in the first half of the seventeenth century. In this sense, we sought to understand discourse from the perspective of those who, for themselves, were defending faith and, in God's name, fought heresy. Also, light is shed dlight on the inquisitorial action and the arguments that sustained it, weighed from the conception and representation of religious and political practice, especially when the existence of the court itself was in dispute (in the case of perdões general and edicts of faith) or of the church itself. Finally, the following problems are discussed: What are the topics used in the Court's defence? How were the discursive images of defense and justification of the Inquisition produced?
