Vulture chess: political practices in the police reports of the newspapper Última Hora during the Getúlio Vargas administration (1951-54)

This dissertation aims to analyse how Última Hora police journalism was used as a mechanism of a political campaing during the democratic goverment of Getúlio Vargas. To this end, the paper focuses on the news of the Nestor Moreira Case, a repórter murdered by a Federal Department of Public Security guard in 1954. Understanding the news as symbolic power units, we will demonstrate the process of ressignifying crime on the newspapper pages through of enunciative choices. Thus, these subjects formed a political discourse, an object that we set out to problematize in tis research. In the end, we intend to prove that the police journalism practiced by Última Hora was decisive for the newspaper would build a heroic image of itself as the institution that promoted the reform of the Departamento Federal de Segurança Públic
