RESUMO:

Frank Capra was one of the most famous directors in the Golden Age of Hollywood, being considered by many as one of the most representatives and awarded during the Roosevelt’s government (1933-1945). The movies made by him talked about social themes (as the Great Depression), without leave behind a positive and optimistic mood, transmitting security and reliability in the progress. Yours popular language and alignment with the government ideals lead him to be invited to make films to the U.S Army during the World War II, resulting in propagandistic movie series (the “Why we fight?” series), known and watched by hundreds of people in the world. This project was made to be first watched by soldiers – and after by non-combatant population- explain the reasons why the USA was now participating of this conflict. Therefore, our proposal is to analyze the way Frank Capra develop your movie narrative, paying special attention in the forms of USA’s representation and the relation between the Capra’s discourse and the Manifest Destiny ideology. This efforts help us to understand the power of culture objects (in our case, the movies) as a field to analyze the social e militaries disputes, as well as the use of this media to propagation and legitimisation of State’s policies.
