SUMMARY:

This research aims to demonstrate how different social groups understood rural property, in a region of Bahia, within a context of possible transformations resulting from the Low of Lands, from a supposed improvement of agriculture, in addition to other factors that marked brazilian rural world, during the second half of the nineteenth
century. Analyzing lands records books from Alagoinhas and Inhambupe villages, local laws, correpondences from city councils in those locations, reports from provincial presidentes and others documents, we seek to understand, in inicial chapters, the social and economic compositon, highlighting its insertion in a logic of modernization and
progress that, diretcly or indirectly, influenced the understanding about the right to land.
Farmers, their neighbors in parish records and some authorities are social groups who appear, in this first moment of the text, creating relationships and understanding about the agrarian question.
