A public university in Baixada Fluminense: a case study on the social impact of the UFRRJ Multidisciplinary Institute in Nova Iguaçu and its surroundings (2005-2017)

The research focuses on public universities during PT governments. With the creation of the Program for the expansion of public universities, Reuni, created in 2007, several universities, including UFRRJ, joined the program, not without controversies surrounding this adhesion. The Multidisciplinary Institute of Nova Iguaçu was the product not only of this policy, but of social movements that pleaded for the creation of a public university within the Baixada Fluminense. The research aims to analyze the social impact that the implementation of a public university in a region composed mainly of workers has both in the municipality that is inserted and in its surroundings. Although the Baixada Fluminense has other university campuses, many of them belonging to the private sector, the creation of a public higher education institution in Nova Iguaçu is a new fact that deserves a more detailed analysis.
