In 2014, the 1964 Brazilian coup d'état completed half a century. To celebrate the occasion, the Military Club edited a special edition of its magazine, dedicated to remembering the events that led up to the episode. Launched amidst the crisis of Brazil’s democratic-representative political model — whose consequences can be felt up to the moment this text was written — the work aims to combat what its creators denounce as a “rereading of facts”. For them, the mainstream media, historians and the left would be united, articulating the dissemination of what they consider “a biased history”, written with the objective of reaffirming the convictions of the groups defeated in 1964. Fruit of a scenario where collective remembrance and political instability mixed up, the publication tries to build a positive look at the participation of the Brazilian Armed Forces: in the national political history, just at the moment when requests for a “military intervention” are again registered by the country. Therefore, this dissertation seeks to contribute to studies on the uses of past, starting from texts found in the Military Club Review: the house of the Republic. The interest falls on issue number 452 of the magazine. In it, a dossier reproduces, through articles, essays and materials from the period, the view that members and “friends” of the association preserve and disseminate about the events that ended the democratic experiment begun in 1946. The hypothesis is that there is an ongoing process of elaboration of statements by supporters of the regime, of which this material would be part, and that it would be related to the recent rise of figures with authoritarian discourses in the Brazilian political scenario. The idea is that it would be possible to try to understand some characteristics of the thought of these individuals and, consequently, of the groups they are part of, through an analysis of the material observed here, taking as a premise the potential that propositions about the past have to guide political actions at the moment of his enunciation.
