SUMMARY:

This work aims to investigate the various possibilities of manumissions in the city of Paraty, between 1861 and 1886. For this, several documental typologies were used in the construction of this research, such as ecclesiastical sources (the baptism seats of the Church of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios) , the releases from the Emancipation Fund and the Letters of Manumission. One of the main objectives of this work is to point out the various strategies and experiences that enslaved men and women developed around the search for manumission. In this sense, the research intends to investigate and indicate the solidarity networks, the godfather relationships, the trajectories, social dynamics, the dialogues and the dealings of the subjects involved in the freedom process. To accomplish these goals, the formation of a database is used to identify information that is not explicit in the documentation, then the nominative linking of sources method is applied. Therefore, the research intends to indicate new particularities between enslaved subjects and those of free condition, indicate new possibilities and contribute to the historiographic production on the subject of slavery and manumission in Brazil.
