This thesis investigates the clandestine organizations of insurgent violence, their members and their performance in the state of Pernambuco, Northeastern Brazil, during the last dictatorship, precisely the activities they developed in the countryside and in the city from 1968 to 1973, with the aim of trigger the Brazilian revolution and fight the dictatorial regime installed since April 1964. These organizations were: National Liberating Alliance (ALN), Northeast Liberation Front (FLNE), Brazilian Revolutionary Communist Party (PCBR), Revolutionary Communist Party (PCR) and Revolutionary Armed Vanguard – Palmares (VAR – Palmares).
In dealing with this fundamental theme, other correlated, and members, of processes that border or even make up the basic scenario for understanding the phenomenon were addressed. The adoption of armed struggle, in its proposal for guerrilla warfare, as a revolutionary path, is characterized as a third-world and also a South American trend of the period and, like any social project, undetermined in its outcome. Taken as a central category, the utopian-concrete dimension (according to the concept of the German philosopher Ernst Bloch, who differentiates it from the abstract utopia) of the project of armed struggle in Brazil, carried out in the 1960s/70s, is one of the aspects discussed . In order to understand the historical social meaning of the armed (revolutionary) movements in Pernambuco, a quick comparative exposition of the armed uprising of November 1935 – led by the Brazilian Communist Party, the first moment in which insurgent violence was set as the path to revolution Brazilian - and the armed project that would come only after the 1964 coup. A long-lasting panorama was woven of the systematic exercise of violence in the History of Brazil and, especially, in the Northeast, undertaken by the State, in partnership with and dependence on with the elites. In this thesis, this plot was discussed, dialoguing this plot with the category of use of violence as a collective political
action, demonstrating the historical exceptionality of the use of revolutionary violence, if compared to state violence. The process of reviewing the armed path promoted by the insurgents in prisons (Recife Detention House; Bom Pastor Penal Colony and Barreto Campelo Penitentiary) is one of the elements analyzed within the closure of the armed struggle project. As for this review process, we can conclude that systematic torture played a key role in the reconsideration of the armed route, not only as an individual impact, but collectively, as a factor
of rupture with the ideal of militant behavior of the revolutionary agent aligned with the guerrilla struggle.
