SUMMARY:

This thesis investigates the masters strategies of gradual emancipation based on the case of the Steiger family and the actions and forms of negotiation of freedom by the slave and freed families of the Victoria farm in the 1870s and 1880s. To investigate the strategies developed by the senzala of the Victoria sesmaria we examine the social places that these slave and freed families occupied in the process of the Abolition and the families of enslaved people their struggles to negotiate new labor relations with the Steiger, in the last two decades of slavery and in the post-abolition period, until 1892. To understand the reconfiguration of labor relations on the Victoria sesmaria we analyzed the personal correspondence (letters, Steiger's biography, and the administrative report of the Victoria plantation) of the Steiger family. In the analysis of these sources, we noticed both the negotiation of the senzala for remuneration for the activities developed, as well as the Steiger's impressions about slavery and its future and their efforts to maintain the dependency relations of those families. At the height of the slavery crisis and the strength of the abolitionist movement, we follow the slaves' struggle in the Victoria sesmaria in court to assert their right to freedom, placing the Steiger masters as defendants before the tribunais. We also examined the family trees of this senzala, punctuating its organization and how a community with internal and external ties of kinship and compadrio was formed there, demonstrating that this slaveholding was old and managed to remain stable for more than three decades. Our intention was to pursue these historical subjects in time and across different documentary series, trying to locate them in various contexts. Finally, this thesis supports the hypothesis that the Steiger family could not withstand the decay of the master moral force, accelerated from the Free Womb Law, failing to contain the collective abandonment of the rebellious senzala of the Victoria sesmaria before May 13, 1888.
