BIG AREA: Ciências Humanas
AREA: História
SUMMARY:

The present research aims to raise elements about the operationalization of the illegal trafficking of Africans to Brazil on the coast of South Fluminense, mainly from the locality of Itaguahy in the 1830s and 1840s. Taking into account the recent historiographical discoveries about the functioning of the illegal market in the coastal regions of the Province of Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Espírito Santo, it was possible to draw connections between traders from Itaguahy and big names of illegal trafficking in the Empire such as Joaquim de Souza Breves and João José dos Santos Breves. In a network of alliances – perceived through the Count of Itaguahy – that involved strategic family formations, commercial partners and transatlantic connections to capture Africans, Itaguahy starts to be perceived – from the parish registers of the parish of São Francisco de Xavier – as an important point of entry and distribution of illegal labor for local demand and for other locations in Rio de Janeiro in the said decades. The parishes that made up the aforementioned municipality, dating from the 19th century, were dismembered into other cities that are currently called “Seropédica” and “Paracambi”, while the parish of São Francisco Xavier gave way to the municipality of “Itaguaí”. All located in Baixada Fluminense nowadays.
