SUMMARY:

This research deals with how the Rio Branco law 2040 of 1871, known as the Free Womb Law, changed the life of the enslaved population (mainly children) in the region of Itaguahy, more specifically in the Freguesia Nossa Senhora da Conceição do Bananal. Thus, one of the central points for the research is to understand if the 1871 law in practice worked for the enslaved in the region. And where were these inocentes who were freed by the law in that society for the purposes of slavery. In the chapter taken for qualification, we sought to analyze the issue of local politics linked to discussions around the servile element, thus realizing if the people involved in official politics were in a way contrary to the law and its articles. The main sources analyzed were the minutes of the municipal council of Itaguahy between the years 1867 and 1871, and the Annals of the Brazilian Parliament of the chamber of deputies of the province of Rio de Janeiro, with this, comparisons were made between the speeches produced by the deputies and the deliberations of the councilors of Itaguahy.
