SUMMARY:

This theme of this project is the construction of the Brazilian Imperial Army from the study of the trajectory of Manoel Luís Osório (1808-1879). Its participation in different conflicts throughout the 19th century, especially on the borders of the Province of São Pedro do Rio Grande do Sul, made it possible to increase its social prestige and its links with the political circle of the Court. Osório walked a long way to obtain the noble titles of baron, viscount, and marquis of Herval. He obtained them during his performance in the War of the Triple Alliance (1864-1870). Only at the end of the 1870s did he occupy the highest post of the military hierarchy, that of marshal. Just as it was chosen by the Emperor to occupy one of the seats of the senate and the ministry of war. This is the “end point” of his successful military and political career at the Court of Rio de Janeiro,   however, the path he took did not follow a linear logic. Despite having projected his name at the national level, for much of his life he was involved in political dynamics and military maneuvers on the frontier of his province. The work aims to analyze the construction of military personnel in the South of the Empire of Brazil through the military career of Manoel Luís Osório. Identifying how he achieved progression in the military sphere, how he acted on the battlefields and in the political dynamics of the South of the imperial state. Faced with the absence of specific laws and rules for the institution of the 19th century imperial army, there were many paths to ascend in the military career. Through his social origin, his inherited or constituted relationships along his life, as well as his services to the monarchy, Osório became important to the imperial political center. Therefore, the central hypothesis of this research proposal is that the trajectory of social, military and political ascension of this individual was built from strategies and articulations that produced ties with the Empire. That is, it was his ties of political relations that helped him to project itself in the military sphere and in the restricted world of the Court. By the way, we tried to work with a group of sources of different types. The purpose of to chase the “name” Manoel Luís Osório, the vestiges and fragments of his actions as an individual.
