SUMMARY:

The present thesis aims to understand the social and economic insertion of shops, factories and manufacturies in the central parishes (Santana, Sacramento, Candelária, Santa Rita and São José) of Rio de Janeiro between 1830 and 1872, having as a central question their location in urban space. When we came across the codes of postures and infractions of municipal postures of the General Archive of the City of Rio de Janeiro, we verified the existence of regulations regarding the location of factories and shops in the center of the Carioca province between 1830 and 1870. Based on a hygienist discourse, from these and other documents we can see that a project began to take shape in the first half of the 19th century that sought to separate the manufacturing segment from the residents and other professional branches. In view of this, we mapped the shops, factories and manufacturies in the central parishes of Rio de Janeiro, as well as verifying the mechanisms for creating these organizations and the forms of resistance to remain in the city area in face of the regulations for moving towards the suburbs. In addition, we investigated the relationships established between factories, residents and local authorities in this process of removal of manufacturing establishments, as well as the process of valuing commercial and financial activities in the period. In the end, we found that in addition to the concern with public hygiene, there were other motivations for urban cleaning undertaken through municipal postures.
