SUMMARY:

This dissertation starts from a research proposal on the Great Plague of Lisbon of 1569, based on the study of the Breue Summario, a text by an anonymous Dominican who reports, through a letter, the occurrences and vicissitudes of the plague that hit Lisbon that year. For this, having as a propelling parameter of my study the linguistic and intellectual contextualism, as well as the rhetoric as a discipline, I seek to reflect on the Dominicans as a social and linguistic subject, following the narrative that the Order weaves about itself regarding the preparation of the Summario . In order, moreover, to circumvent the institution of the Portuguese Inquisition in order to evaluate the persecutory society and, from that, to understand elements built in the Dominican narrative that delimits reasons and causes for the establishment of the plague as a divine cause, as well as means of admonishing it.
