SUMMARY:

Body image is the mental representation of one's own body. This is an area of constant evolution of knowledge, representing great importance in recent decades. To this end, much research has been developed in order to provide advances in the knowledge of this construct, as well as means of developing research in this area. Sociocultural factors, such as the media, the type of relationship established between family members and the influence of social groups, such as friends, can interfere with a young person's relationship with their body image. Pertinent to sociocultural theories of body image, social comparison refers to personal evaluation based on comparison with others. Therefore, one of the theories that explains this sociocultural influence is the so-called social comparison model, proposed by Thompson et al. (1999). This model is made up of four primary sources of influence: parents, peers/friends, the media, and people around us. Thus, it is believed that these comparisons can lead to ongoing bodily changes. The objective of this investigation is to understand attitudes related to the body image of adolescent high school students in the context of School Physical Education. This is a qualitative, descriptive and exploratory investigation. It is expected to bring together approximately 30 teenagers enrolled in high school in schools in the state of Rio de Janeiro, aged between 14 and 17. 4 focus groups will be held. In addition to the information collected in the focus groups, sociodemographic information about the participants will be collected at this stage. Data analysis at this stage will be carried out using content from the focus groups, using content analysis. As a result, it is expected that in-depth knowledge about perceptions about the body and attitudes towards social comparisons can support pedagogical actions in the field of School Physical Education that aim to develop positive body image.
