SUMMARY:

We will start our investigation considering that from their encounters, young people reconfigure possibilities of existence in the Rio das Pedras community. They give new meaning to the spaces they occupy based on their aesthetic manifestations. In this perspective, the region is redefined based on its circulation and collective action, by occupying and inventing its spaces. Located in the west side of Rio de Janeiro, the Rio das Pedras community had its first homes built by migrants from the northeast region, through a disorderly occupation that began in the mid-1960s. and, at its other extreme, the district of Anil, located in Jacarepaguá and named after the river that cuts through this region. The meeting of this research site took place in conversations with young students from a public school in the region, expanding the scope of the investigation, which will take place inside and outside the school space. Through their meetings, young people create beyond scarcity, and invent their places, aesthetically filled with possibilities that expand their limitations. In their exercise, they somehow “poetize” the Rio das Pedras, reconfigure their ways of thinking about their territory, and consequently about themselves. Creating the imagined space, which is a dreamed space, allows us to re-elaborate the very ways of producing in these places and of understanding them, and this can infect the environment and the community. Thus, we wish to cast a sensitive look at the ways of constituting the place Rio das Pedras, based on the displacements and encounters of these young people. And thinking from the bodies they create beyond the supposedly established logics, of what is or is not correct to be, of the presumed ways of existing and of belonging to places. Our specific questions start from the observation of aesthetic movements and encounters of these young people who circulate in the community. We will observe the influence of these manifestations on the aesthetic and ethical formation of these beauty creators. We will look for the possibilities of expanding the knowledge of these young creators, in order to understand what expansion of knowledge would be possible when thinking about the aesthetic logics implied in the meetings, and in the ways of thinking about them and giving feedback to them. In investigating their expansion exercises, we will think about ways of creating a future for young people and the places where they live, and their ways of dealing with and restructuring these places, based on desire and action in the community. When these young, beauty-creating bodies, invent aesthetically in their circulation, they also reduce, internally, the precariousness of just surviving. Repeatedly experimenting with their bodies occupying places means to fray the limits of occupation that their manifestations invent. The frayed space reduces other limiting spaces, in its territory, in its collective formulations and inside each young person involved in the events. When this body creates, in the expansion space of what was occupied by precariousness, it “pushes” the limitations in its aesthetic exercise of this territory. When bodies create beauty in these places, they expand their possibilities by insisting on the expansion - because the creation of beauty requires insistence - that occurs in their encounters. In the same way, this exercise, by fraying its spaces of freedom, reduces, even in the exercise of dreaming, the sense of precariousness of places and bodies. Expanding the list of what is considered essential for living is an exercise proper to bodies, and in their performance they also discuss what happens as the precariousness of their places of displacement. In this sense, we must think about the Rio das Pedras community, its history, and how, based on its formatting, these subjects occupy, fill and move in their needs and specificities, considering the exercises of power that physically or symbolically narrow , its passage and stopping spaces.
