SUMMARY:

This dissertation presents a pedagogical product with reading, interpretation, and text comprehension activities, focusing on lexical ambiguity—through polysemy or homonymy—in comic strips. It also presents the results of its initial application in two sixth-grade classes at a municipal school in Nilópolis, Rio de Janeiro, a city in the metropolitan region of the state of Rio de Janeiro. This is an action research project (Thiollent, 1986; Tripp, 2005; Thiollent; Colette, 2014) that combines the results of previous work with the knowledge of those involved (Thiollent, 1986). More specifically, they act together, in a participatory or cooperative manner, to solve or mitigate collective problems. Based on this premise, through the application of the developed material, the aim was for the students to: i) feel a sense of belonging to the teaching-learning process; ii) reflect on how they read, interpreted, and understood the texts they had access to; iii) develop their reading and interpretive autonomy; iv) explore possibilities of interpreting and understanding multimodal texts through comic strips; and v) become more active in social dynamics, becoming more linguistically competent. Although the objectives were not fully achieved, the results indicate that the proposal contributed to the development of critical and active citizens in the society they are part of, developing various skills associated with reading. Furthermore, it will benefit other teachers, especially those of Portuguese as a native language, who face difficulties in the teaching-learning process of reading, interpretation, and textual comprehension, providing material that can be adapted to different realities and the results of its initial application.
