This dissertation aims to present an analysis of the importance of metalinguistic knowledge in Portuguese Language classes, specifically in reading and writing teaching. We found that many Elementary students would transfer the opening and closing marks of the genre fairy tale to other genres. Thus, based on Tripp (2005) research methodology, we elaborate a pedagogical mediation proposal and adopt the metacognitive approach, favoring the process of recognition of the main information that allows textual progression. The genres fairy tale and news were selected for such a proposal, seeking to counter their differences. Even both genres belonging to the mode of narrative and descriptive textual organization it is possible to identify distinctions, because while one presents fiction as characteristic, the other deals with a real story. In addition, in the first genus the textual progression occurs in a linear way; already in the second, in a non-linear way. The proposal of pedagogical mediation was applied in a 7th grade class of Elementary School in a municipal public school in Rio de Janeiro and it took seven classes and the beginning of an octave, because we felt the need to resume some points at the end of the proposal. After the application of the proposal, we ana- lyzed the textual production evaluations carried out by the students in the first two months, before the mediation proposal, with the textual production evaluations carried out in the fourth quarter, after applying the mediation proposal. The results showed a significant improvement in the transferences of opening and closing marks of the genus fairy tale to another genre. However, we emphasize the importance of exercising more the identification of the main and secondary information that allow the recognition of the textual progression. Another two points that we highlight are the difficulty in writing written questions that go beyond the literal level of reading and the relevance of listening to the teacher.
