Based on the theoretical assumptions of Variationist Sociolinguistics, especially on the application of the orality-literacy continuum proposed by Bortoni-Ricardo (2004), which approaches the textual genres continuum by Marcuschi (2001), this work is inscribed as a action-research (TRIPP, 2005) that seeks to develop a pedagogical mediation with the phenomenon of variation nós / a gente in texts of 9th grade middle school students. Therefore, the general objective is to offer a contribution to the Portuguese language teaching with regard to the approach to linguistic variation in the classroom based on a systematic work with the variable phenomenon in focus. As specific objectives, we intend (i) to present a survey of the variants used for the representation of P4 in texts produced by middle school students from genres organized along the orality-literacy continuum; (ii) to favor the students' literacy so that they recognize the contexts of use of the variants in each point of the continuum, in order to develop the ability to move from texts representing the [+ orality] pole to those of the [+ literacy] pole. In order to reach the proposed objectives, we have developed a pedagogical mediation that has allowed the use of variants through text production activities and retextualization in the following genres: (i) experience report, representative of texts with orality traits; (ii) report, representative of an event of communication mediated by written culture, in which the grammatical tradition is usually stronger. The results have showed that, in general, the students expressed in their productions the writing practice of Brazilian literate society: in the genre not located in the [+ literacy] pole of the continuum, the alternation nós / a gente, so common in spoken speech, has appeared stronger, while in the gender belonging to this pole the use of traditional variant has been semicategorical. These results reflect, on the one hand, the deconstruction of the belief that writing only accepts the canonical variant and, on the other hand, the progress in the students' literacy process, because they have come to recognize the contexts in which the two variants of P4 can co-occur and those in which only the canonical variant is admitted, so that they have become able to move from one point to another of the continuum, depending on the textual genre in which the communicative event occurs.
