SUMMARY:

This research aims to encourage literary reading in a critical and sensitive way, emphasizing the importance of pedagogical practices that value literature as a tool for awareness and social transformation. Using the novel Capitães da Areia (Captains of the Sands), by Jorge Amado, as the central axis of a didactic proposal focused on literary literacy, the project seeks to promote critical reading by highlighting the role of literature as a means of humanizing society. It reflects on the effects of social exclusion, inequality, and the marginalization of children and adolescents. The theoretical foundation is based on the assumptions of authors such as Teresa Colomer (2007), Rildo Cosson (2022), Isabel Solé (2014), Angela Kleiman (2002), Antônio Candido (2011), Luiz Antônio Marcuschi (2008), Roxane Rojo (2009, 2012), and Regina Zilberman (2008), in addition to guiding documents of Brazilian basic education, such as the National Curriculum Parameters and the Common National Curriculum Base. The choice of the novel Capitães da Areia is justified by the relevance of its theme, which denounces social injustice and abandonment—issues that still pose challenges for public and educational policies. The research methodology follows a qualitative approach, developed through action research, according to the principles of Michel Thiollent (2011). The didactic proposal will be applied to 3rd-year high school students at the Colégio Estadual de Araras, located in the mountainous region of the state of Rio de Janeiro. In this way, the project hopes to significantly contribute to the creation of a school environment that is more sensitive to social issues and more committed to the development of critical and empathetic readers.
