SUMMARY:

This study aims to investigate pedagogical strategies for fostering literary reading among fifth-grade students, grounded in the concept of literary literacy and the use of “cordel” literature as a didactic resource. It assumes that the rhymed and musical language of this popular poetic form resonates with contemporary youth culture, particularly with rhythmic expressions such as “pancadões”, which are common in peripheral and community settings. In this sense, the research seeks not only to bring students closer to literary reading but also to encourage an active and critical relationship with the text, moving beyond traditional approaches based on memorization and standardized comprehension exercises. The corpus of analysis is “Iracema: um reconto em cordel”, by Stélio Torquato Lima, an adaptation of José de Alencar’s canonical novel into the cordel format. This choice makes it possible to work simultaneously with formal aspects—rhyme, meter, and orality—and thematic dimensions such as cultural identity, intertextuality, and belonging. Methodologically, the research follows a qualitative approach structured in two main stages: (1) a bibliographical review addressing literary literacy, reading conceptions, and the role of popular literature in education; and (2) a pedagogical intervention involving activities that connect the literary text with students’ sociocultural experiences. The expected outcomes include the development of reading competence, the expansion of students’ cultural repertoire, and the recognition of literature as an instrument for reflection and self-expression. The study concludes that incorporating cordel literature into the classroom can serve as a bridge between erudite and popular cultures, contributing to a more meaningful and democratic literary education while also affirming “cordel” as a valued cultural and pedagogical heritage.
