SUMMARY:

This research aims at observing difficulties concerning some reading and writing aspects students from public elementary schools face in Rio de Janeiro. From this perspective, it was important to dissect this issue and analyse the extent to which the relation between referencing and identification as well as types of discourse production can have any influence on students’ communicative competence (regarding Brazilian 6th and 7th grades’ studying of short stories). Furthermore, the point is to reflect on how pupils construct meaning through association, when dealing with texts in Portuguese classes. Great scholars such as Michael Bakhtin, Luiz Antônio Marcuschi, Ingedore Koch and others were major reference points in writing genres, short stories and referencing processes. Moreover, models of David Tripp’s Action research methodology procedures, Dolz’s didactic sequencing and Schneuwly and Noverraz’s pedagogical mediation were taken into consideration in the pursuit of reducing the obstacles mentioned above.
