SUMMARY:

This dissertation aims to recognize the Black presence in Little Africa and how colonialist thinking influenced Brazilian history. It highlights how it has materialized in official projects to erase ancestry, a past of Black contributions to the city's development, and the exploitation and hardships experienced in Rio de Janeiro's port area. It also silences the voices of local social groups who, according to Lélia Gonzalez (1982), must be kept subordinate within the school system to render Black culture invisible, contributing to Black students' failure to recognize themselves in school curricula. Using field research in the region, historical books on the subject, academic research, and scientific articles by Black authors analyzing Black people themselves as methodology, I sought to demonstrate, through the itineraries, through this important site of sensitive memory, the importance of Little Africa and its characters and how this erasure affected my students' historical knowledge. To achieve the goal of analyzing the erasures, silencing, and power relations surrounding Black histories and experiences in the port area, encompassing the current neighborhoods of Saúde, Gamboa, and Santo Cristo, I propose using field trips as a pedagogical tool to bring the sensitive themes and locations of Little Africa, with all its ancestry, closer to the historical knowledge of students from the communities of Guadalupe and Anchieta, helping them overcome their limited knowledge imposed by traditional history.
