The effects of the pandemic on the transition to adolescence: an integrative review of the adolescent subject in the school context

The COVID-19 pandemic is a historic event of great impact in the fields of Health and Education. With the recommendation of quarantine, distancing and social isolation, schools were closed, as these institutions were considered virus dispersers, as had already occurred with the already known influenza virus (UNESCO, 2020; FIOCRUZ, 2020; WHO, 2020). The present work aims to investigate the effects of school closures and social isolation and the reopening of schools in the post-pandemic period on the crossing of adolescence and its implications for the processes of separation and losses triggered by the pandemic. According to surveys by UNESCO (2020), UNICEF (2020) and Fiocruz (2020), the closing of schools, on a global scale, had consequences for mental health, learning and an increase in situations of social vulnerability. It is necessary to expand research on the critical period of the pandemic and on the current moment. In the case of the field of Education, conducting research in schools to verify the effects of the pandemic and post-pandemic on the lives of children and adolescents is of great relevance. For Alberti and Pollo (2005) adolescence occupies a specific place in our subjectivity, a time that is marked by the separation of parents from childhood, by the construction of new ideals and by new sexual experiences, in short, a journey that implies a work of elaboration and losses. If adolescence already implies a process of elaboration of losses and separations, what did the pandemic as a traumatic time produce of losses and separations for adolescents? What marks were left by the pandemic on adolescent subjects? The research seeks to contribute to the implementation of a integrative literature review, analyzing articles that addressed the themes: adolescence, mental health, school and pandemic. The bibliographic survey points to the social inequalities that marked Brazilian society during and after the pandemic. In this research we will be guided by the contributions of psychoanalysis, articulating the concepts of trauma and anguish that marked the pandemic period and the mental health of adolescents.
