SUMMARY:

The Academia Militar das Agulhas Negras (AMAN) is a Higher Military Education Institution of the Brazilian Army that conducts the training of combat officers in the Military Military Education Line. The need to analyze the influence of self-efficacy and mindfulness on the AMAN cadet's motivation to lead arose due to the recognition that training leaders is one of AMAN's main objectives and the perception of the difficulty of leading in the current situation characterized by demanding missions, climates extremes, sleep deprivation, cultural dissonance, physical fatigue, prolonged separation from family and threat of serious bodily harm or even death. In the study, self-efficacy and mindfulness were considered as predictors of motivation to lead. self-efficacy can be understood as the ability that the individual believes they have to perform a certain task and be successful in challenging situations. Mindfulness can be understood as an intentional state of functioning that is characterized by engagement with the present time, leading the individual to new possibilities for interpreting situations and being open to new information with conscious strategies. Motivation to lead (MTL) requires the leader to have a satisfactory level of well-being and predisposition. 726 cadets from the 2nd and 4th years of AMAN Arms/Cadres/Service participated in the study, 375 (51.7%) from the second year and 351 (48.3%) from the fourth year. Participants were submitted to three questionnaires: the Mindful Attention Awareness Scale (MAAS), the Perceived General Self-Efficacy Scale and the individual differences construct called Motivation to Lead (MTL). The instruments were applied face-to-face, using smartphones, all in the same location. The data were analyzed using the IBM SPSS and AMOS programs, both version 19. Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) procedures were carried out for the three instruments and Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) of the Motivation to Lead Scale. The structure of the instrument has been changed. Thus, the first factor (motivation to lead with a social-normative basis) had 8 items. The second factor (lack of motivation to lead based on negative affect) had only 04 items and the third factor (motivation to lead based on calculation) had only 03 items. The use of the structural equation modeling technique revealed that, as hypothesized, there was a positive influence of self-efficacy and mindfulness on motivation to lead. Self-efficacy positively and significantly influenced the normative social factor of motivation to lead, and negatively and significantly influenced the calculative factor and the negative affect factor. Mindfulness negatively influenced the calculative and negative affective factors. However, the influence of mindfulness on the social normative factor was not significant. In general, the results obtained are in accordance with the literature, and are therefore expected for the present study.
