At the Crossroads of Inclusion: An Analysis of Public Policies for Families Belonging to Terreiro Communities through the Unique Registry for Social Programs - A Study on Social Representations in the Municipality of Nova Iguaçu

The present study investigates the implementation and impacts of public policies targeted at terreiro communities in Nova Iguaçu, with a specific focus on the active search program for families belonging to these communities for inclusion in the Unique Registry for Social Programs. Recognizing the historical context of exclusion and violence against non-hegemonic groups in Brazil, especially Afro-descendants, this work highlights the importance of terreiro communities as sacred spaces for preserving African traditions and as agents of a more inclusive and diverse society. The research, conducted between 2021 and 2023, observed a significant increase in the number of families enrolled in the program, and evaluated the qualitative effects of the policies, particularly concerning access to basic services such as health and education for neighboring communities to the terreiros. The analysis of social representations of individuals self-declared as belonging to terreiro communities in the Unique Registry provided insights into the perceptions and needs of these communities, with a focus on issues related to education and health. This study contributes to understanding the role of public policies in the inclusion and well-being of terreiro communities, highlighting challenges, opportunities, and the need for inclusive and culturally sensitive approaches in the formulation and implementation of local public policies.
