SUMMARY:

This dissertation discusses important points about the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on people's mental health. COVID-19 pandemic on people's mental health and the issue of medicalization as the predominant response. It is true that social isolation and changes in routin can lead to symptoms such as anxiety, sadness, insomnia and other manifestations such as emotional problems. In addition, it is understandable that people face difficulties during this period of social deprivation. However, it is important to emphasize that the approach to mental health should not be limited to medicalization alone. A balance between forms of treatment is considered fundamental, recognizing that medicalization is not the solution and that each individual can respond differently to different types of intervention. The study was carried out by analyzing of psychotropic drugs dispensed in two pharmacies (A and B) in the municipality of Barra Mansa, in the state of Rio de Janeiro; before, during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. The results showed that pharmacy A from 2018 to 2019 there was a trend towards increased consumption of psychotropic drugs, especially antidepressants and antipsychotics, in the pre-crisis period, but total consumption from 2019 to 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic fell by 9.02%. At pharmacy B, in 2020, at the height of the pandemic in Brazil to the year 2021, there was a 26.35% reduction in total consumption of psychotropic drugs. In the period of decline in cases of the disease in 2022 in the post-crisis period, a 3.24% drop in the consumption of these drugs was observed, however consumption of anxiolytics increased by 149%. These results show only a that there was an increase in the consumption of antipsychotics and an increase in the consumption of anxiolytics in the post-crisis period, highlighting the health crisis which has brought about significant changes in people's lifestyles.
