Leadership is one of the roles that future professionals may assume throughout their careers, and it should be developed during their academic life. The Research Group: EQUIlibrium Rural: Equine-Assisted Transdisciplinary Interventions at the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro works to train university students to provide services focused on well-being and quality of life through human-horse interaction, and based on humble leadership, it encourages the learning of this skill within the team. This research project is part of a larger research project called: “Equine-Assisted Learning in Personal Development”, and here it focuses on the topic of leadership. Equine-Assisted Experiential Learning (EAEL) was chosen as a leadership development model, based on the systemic and horizontal view of the leader and the act of leading, in line with Schein's concept of humble leadership, Gardner's personal intelligences and leadership attributes described by Freitas, Klein and Fargundes. The general objective of this research is to evaluate the impact of the Equine-Assisted Experiential Learning (EAEL) experience on the development of leadership attributes in student mediators of the EQUIlibrium Rural Team. The specific objectives are: a) to verify the attributes of leaders perceived by the self-awareness awakened in the experiences, through field observation and the narrative of leaders in training; b) to test activity proposals according to Kolb's learning cycle, through field observation and the narrative of leaders in training; c) to evaluate leadership training protocols used. The study design is descriptive, qualitative and interventional. Two studies were carried out, a pilot study, through a workshop with seven student members of the EQUIlibrium Rural project and the research itself, with team training, with five members. The results of the pilot study contributed to the improvement of the research design, which was implemented with three actions: i) 2 workshops open to the entire team at the beginning and end of the school semester; ii) three training meetings aimed only at research participants; iii) three observation meetings (by the researcher and self-observation by the participant). Four instruments were used for data collection: Questionnaire; Qualitative-quantitative instrument for self-assessment of leadership competence; Self-reflection and insight scale; and researcher's field diary. The quantitative data from the scales followed their own procedures, and the qualitative data were interpreted through Emancipatory Dialogic Narrative Analysis (ANDE). The analysis of the results obtained indicated that EAEL contributes to leadership learning. We noticed that the training provided space for expanding the participants' self-awareness about the leadership characteristics exercised. We also observed the development of leadership attributes throughout the training phases. This work advanced the theoretical-methodological systematization of Equine-Assisted Experiential Learning, especially regarding the program focused on leadership, with the creation of replicable protocols.
