SUMMARY:

This thesis project aims to investigate how cisgender adult men with established artistic careers in dance perceive and negotiate naturalist stereotypes of sex/gender, race, and age (Pereira, 2021) in their professional trajectories in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It analyzes strategies of confrontation, ressignification, and resistance that resonate in the construction of counter-hegemonic subjectivities and the disruption of socially imposed male emotional silencing. The general objective is to examine the negotiation strategies employed by adult male dance artists to address the perception and confrontation of gender, race, and age stereotypes in their careers. Specific objectives include describing psychosocial tactics, unveiling intersections among stereotypes, and analyzing how dance subverts hegemonic masculinity ideals. Methodologically, the study proposes two stages: the first involves a literature review on naturalist stereotypes in/about dance, aiming to highlight existing academic discussions on the proposed theme; the second comprises an empirical phenomenological study using the Empirical Phenomenological Method (MFE) proposed by Amedeo Giorgi (Giorgi, 1985), which prioritizes the essential description of phenomena as they present themselves to participants' consciousness, suspending the researcher's presuppositions to capture authentic meanings. The intentional sample will consist of 8 to 16 male dance artists, selected through the author's contact network (Instagram), with data collection via sociodemographic questionnaire followed by semi-structured interviews for analysis. The postulated hypothesis is that these men mitigate stereotypes through dance, constructing fluid identities that challenge patriarchal norms. The research is justified by the gap in intersectional studies on male dancers in Brazil, with relevance to social psychology and gender issues. Expected outcomes include contributing to the visibility of men in dance, reducing stereotyping, and promoting sociocultural inclusion of more male bodies in this art form.
