SUMMARY:

In recent years, concern with mental health has intensified, as there has been a growing increase in demands for care in this field. The widespread diffusion of psychiatric vocabulary and its developments brings new perspectives on psychological suffering, with important consequences for the ways of dealing with mental illness. In the 19th century, Friedrich Nietzsche already considered tragedy and suffering as part of existence and conceived the importance of affirming the tragic aspect for what he termed “great health.”

From an intersection between mental health and philosophy, this study adopts Nietzsche’s genealogical perspective to investigate the place of the tragic within psychiatric vocabulary. This research will be developed by considering materials necessary to understand Nietzsche’s views on health, suffering, and tragedy, as well as literature addressing the historical and current aspects that reveal the specificities of contemporary psychiatry.

We propose the hypothesis that the model of diagnostic classification is characterized by a form of hyponarrativity, insofar as it is based on objective descriptions of symptoms. We expect that the discussions presented may contribute to the emergence of new questions in the field of mental health and to the strengthening of forms of valuation and care practices that affirm life.
