Female aging: figure and ground in the experiences of climacteric.
Psychology, Climacteric, Mental health, Gestalt approach, Phenomenology
Women account for 51.5% of the Brazilian population, according to data from the 2022 IBGE Census, with more than 30 million falling into the climacteric age range. Although the climacteric is a natural event of female aging, caused by ovarian failure and a decrease in estrogen production, it constitutes a phase of biopsychosocial changes—a state of imbalance related to the unknown. In the search for a new balance, the phenomenon of the climacteric brings up various issues that demand a psychological approach. Psychology is a science concerned with the psychic processes related to human thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Thus, this study aims to understand how women perceive and experience the climacteric. Data collection will take place in two stages: the first will consist of a self-administered sociodemographic questionnaire and the Menopause Rating Scale (MRS), shared in existing women's messaging groups within the military community. The second stage will involve semi-structured interviews with women aged 40–55, residing in a military village in the municipality of Resende/RJ, who agree to participate in the interview. Data analysis will be conducted in light of the Gestalt approach, focusing on the repercussions for their mental health. The data analysis model for the qualitative phenomenological research will follow Amedeo Giorgi, aiming to describe experiences to find the central meaning of these lived experiences, their essential structure, or the general structure of what was lived.
