SUMMARY:

The mental health of college students is a growing concern, particularly in contexts of socioeconomic vulnerability, where academic demands, financial pressures, and adjustment challenges can intensify anxiety symptoms and compromise academic performance. In this regard, student assistance policies that integrate financial aid with psychosocial support measures are essential for fostering student retention and ensuring quality education. This study aims to analyze anxiety symptoms among university students, drawing on literature regarding prevalence and empirical data from students benefiting from the National Student Assistance Policy (PNAES) at the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRRJ) describing its frequency, intensity of these symptoms and their association with academic performance. The study employs a mixed-methods approach, combining a systematic literature review (conducted according to PRISMA guidelines) with a descriptive, quantitative cross-sectional study. Data collection involves a sociodemographic questionnaire and the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale – short form (DASS-21), validated for the Brazilian population. Data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and mean comparison tests, depending on the nature of the variables. The findings are expected to contribute to the improvement of institutional student assistance policies and to the development of strategies promoting mental health and academic retention for students facing socioeconomic vulnerability.
