RESUMO:

This research has investigated, by descriptive models, the use of the psychoeducational approach in primary health care, as practiced by psychologists. The objective was to identify contexts and ways of using psychoeducational interventions in the daily lives of psychologists who work in public health services to encourage prevention or treatment of health problems. It was also sought to verify the perceptions of these professionals about the possibilities and relevance of psychoeducation as an action plan at the primary level of attention and their qualification for work of this nature, considering their experiences and learning since graduation. In the data collection, a self-administered questionnaire was applied to obtain answers from psychologists who worked in Primary Care in different municipalities of the south of the state of Rio de Janeiro, which is composed of two parts: the first with questions about professional training and performance and the second with multiple-choice questions related to the use of psychoeducation, including, for example, frequency, purposes, target population, strategies and resources employed. In all, 20 professionals responded to the instrument in print or electronic format. Besides, seven of these respondents participated individually in a semi-structured interview, through the previous script, with a view to qualitative analysis and a deeper understanding of their perceptions. The script was structured in the following thematic axes: knowledge and uses of psychoeducation in professional practice and training for the use of psychoeducation. The questionnaire data were submitted to descriptive statistical analysis, while those from the interviews were categorized according to Bardin's content analysis. As results, concerning the use of psychoeducation, it was verified the use of this strategy, individually and group, in different scenarios and with different segments of the population. The psychologists highlighted the importance of educational practice as a preventive action in the promotion of self-care. The main barriers pointed out in this process were the non-acceptance or little interest of users, linked to the non-continuity of the proposed psycho-educational activities, as well as the lack or inadequacy of physical space and material resources. On the other hand, potentialities of psychoeducation use were reported, such as greater self-care among beneficiaries of health services. Regarding their professional training, participants felt poorly trained, reporting moderate difficulty in the use of psychoeducational actions, requiring courses to update the practice and follow-up of health teams longitudinally. The study made it possible to broaden the knowledge about psychoeducation practices in primary care and its estimated benefits, providing an overview of its use and important aspects for its strengthening as a technique with the potential to stimulate the acquisition of preventive behaviors.
