RESUMO:

Elderly health has become a pertinent theme nowadays, given the exponential growth this population. Thus, studies aimed at health promotion in old age are necessary. This research is to assess the effects of a group psychological intervention, focusing on body self-perception and the promotion of active aging, on self-esteem, self-rated health and self-care practices of the elderly participants. This is a study experimental, with a pretest posttest design and control group. Twenty elderly people from the age 60, who reside in a city in the Baixada Fluminense will participate. Ten of them will receive the proposed intervention (Psychological Intervention Group – PIG), while the remaining ten will be on the waiting list (Control Group – CG). There will be three phases. In Phase 1, an individual semi-structured interview will be conducted with all participants from both groups to collect sociodemographic and clinical data from each one of them and understand their perceptions on personal health and body image, as well as to assess their initial repertoires of self-care. In addition, the brazilian versions following scales will apply: Escala de Autoestima de Rosenberg and Escala de Avaliação de Capacidade de Autocuidado. In Phase 2, will be implemented a psychological intervention with the elderly from PIG, by holding ten meetings in a group format and content evaluation and session dynamics at the end of each one. In Phase 3, after the end of the group intervention, the participants (PIG and CG) will be submitted to a new assessment, instruments from Phase 1 will be reapplied. Inferential analysis will be conducted with the results of the scales with intra and intergroup comparisons. With the second assessment, the elderly in the PIG are expected to achieve significantly higher score levels on self-esteem, self-rated health and self-care, compared to the first assessment, as well as compared to the data from the CG, indicating the potential benefits of the intervention. Studies like this can encourage the creation of new modalities of group psychological intervention with the elderly as a health promoting strategy in old age.
