Elder; Chronical Disease; Hospitalization.
Population aging occurs in a global scale, even in developing countries. This process is characterized by the constant increase in life expectancy and on fertility decline, which causes economic and public health issues. During the aging process, not only the bones, but all the other body parts involved in motion are impaired, causing lack of balance and falling in old age. Hospitalization due to external causes increase with age. When the elderly fall, they are submitted to extensive orthopedic surgical procedures, which usually demand a long recovery time. Prolonged hospitalization can affect the patient’s social-emotional state as well as the cornification of other diseases. Chronical osteomyelitis is one of the major challenges in orthopedics. It occurs mainly due to exposed fracture complications and surgical contamination. The main objective of this work is to investigate the psychosocial aspects which are present and experienced by the elderly with osteomyelitis hospitalized for a long period of time. This investigation will help to understand and determine the demands and needs of this specific public in a hospital psychology context. By using a qualitative approach, five elderly patients hospitalized for a long period of time will be interviewed so that we can find out their believes, values, meanings and other constructs which cannot be expressed or dealt with variables. With the direct contact and interaction with the elderly patients during the beginning, middle, and end of their hospitalization process, we describe and analyze the context of the prolonged hospitalization as experienced and narrated by the patients themselves. This study discusses health care in the present time, as well as it brings thoughts on professional practice based on interdisciplinary care, having he biopsychosocial model as is north. This study also intends to contribute to the development of effective hospital psychological practices based on the specificity of each group of patients, which in this case, are the elderly, with their needs and demands.
