RESUMO:

The Western panorama related to the current consumption of psychotropic drugs serves as a warning for the approach and reflection on the subject of medicalization. The objective of this work is to approach the topic of medicalization, focusing on the forms of medical discourse and its effects in Western society. The bibliographic study will have as theoretical reference the possible approximations between the works of Hannah Arendt and Freud, in order to produce contributions to the understanding of the contemporary malaise and the way in which this concept is interpreted and incorporated by the medical-biological model in order to problematize behaviors, diagnose and promote exclusively drug treatments. The social and cultural transformations of the last years have made the subject change his ways of being, thinking, acting, feeling and desiring. We note that in the contemporary world interpretations of psychic suffering have gained a pathological status, different from the concept of malaise proposed by Sigmund Freud in 1930, sustained at the time as an inalienable characteristic of the human being. In addition, the ways of understanding the events and conflicts of existence, coming from lay knowledge, have lost their notoriety for another type of discourse, which locates the origin and solution of these problems in the organism of the body. And medical discourse increasingly imposes itself and has come to assume, from the technical-biological-scientific apparatus, man's modes of functioning, his physical constitution and his way of functioning properly.
