SUMMARY:

Emerging adulthood is characterized as a transition stage between adolescence and adulthood, which includes social roles experimenting and life projects construction. At this stage of development, university experience can be an opportunity for growth and ripening in the intellectual and interpersonal fields. When diagnosed with a chronic illness, the young college student will need to deal with biopsychosocial changes that may make it difficult for him to adapt to academic requirements. The goal of this research is to understand the impact of illness on the university life of emerging adults. Starting from qualitative research proposal, undergraduate students from a public university in the state of Rio de Janeiro, aged between 18 and 25 years old and diagnosed with chronic non-communicable diseases, will be invited to participate in a Focal Group, to be conducted online. First, students who agree to join the study will sign a consent form and individually answer questionnaires for socio-demographic and medical-clinical data collection. The meetings, with an average of five participants each, will be based on a roadmap prepared in advance, composed of guiding questions and group dynamics that will seek to investigate how the participants reconcile the university demands and the care with their own health. The results will be analysed using the Descriptive Phenomenological Method. It is hoped to generate knowledge capable of assisting in the elaboration of programs and orientations aimed at the well-being of college students who experience different types of chronic illness.
