SUMMARY:

The present work aims to reflect on the approximations between the terms intellectual disability and mental disorder in the autistic spectrum, starting from theoretical assumptions that bring historical perspectives on the formulation of these concepts. The importance of discussing this topic can be seen in the clinic, as the treatment progresses from the formulation of the differential diagnosis. The work also aims to understand how the distancing of these terms occurred and what correlations are possible to be perceived in the field of psychiatry and psychoanalysis.
