SUMMARY:

This proposal analyzed the association between the construct social identity, elaborated by social anthropologist Celso Castro and defined as the spirit of arms, and the concept of psychological types, elaborated by psychologist Carl Gustav Jung. The analysis was based on data from the corporate education process of cadets of the Agulhas Negras Military Academy (AMAN), which trains combat ant officers of the Brazilian Army in one of the following specialties or branches: Infantry, Cavalry, Artillery, Engineering, Signal Corps, Quartermaster and Ordnance. The general objective of the research is to relate the characteristics of the military spirit of each branch with the psychologically typology developed by Carl Gustav Jung, in order to verify if there is any correlation between the military spirit and the psychological profile of the cadets, according to the specialty chosen by them. The research was carried out with cadets from the 4th year of AMAN, using a qualitative and quantitative methodology during data collection. The QUATI test, developed to assist the analysis of the psychological profile, was applied to 328 cadets, with the sample being stratified into the seven specialties mentioned above. The same sample of cadets was submitted to a questionnaire prepared by the researcher, in order to verify: how the adaptation to this specialty took place; the level of motivation to perform the activities related to the chosen branch. In addition, a semi-structured interview was carried out individually with 21 AMAN officers, professors and instructors from different specialties, of which three officers from each of the seven branches were counted. The results showed a relationship between some psychological types and the spirit of the branches. It was confirmed that there is a prevalence of some types within each specialty; in addition, not only were highlighted the types of easiest adaptation within each branch, but also those with the highest level of motivation.
