EARLYL MALADAPTIVE SCHEMAS IN PATIENTS WITH SUICIDAL BEHAVIOREarly Maladaptativa Schemas; suicidal ideation; suicide attempts
Suicide is considered a serious public health problem worldwide. It is estimated that for every suicide, on average,
20 people make a suicide attempt. Suicidal ideation, suicide attempt and the suicide itself, require clinical
assessment and monitoring of suicide risk. Early Maladaptive Schemas (EMS) are cognitive and emotional patterns
generated by experiences in childhood and adolescence that shape the view of oneself and the world throughout life
and may be related to these suicidal behaviors. Being aware of possible factors and behaviors that signal a risk of
suicide would increase the chances of avoiding the suicidal act, both by health professionals and by close family
members. However, studies on EMSs present in patients with suicidal ideation and/or with a history of previous
attempt are still scarce. This study aims to investigate the possible existence of cognitive, emotional and behavioral
patterns of maladaptive early schemas present in suicidal ideation and/or with a history of previous attempt in adult
patients, using Schema Therapy as a promotion tool of new preventive strategies for the work of psychology
professionals.
